Saludos solidarios desde Washington, DC para mis hermanos y hermanas viequenses y para todos los que están aquí hoy, en este Segundo Relevo por la Paz en Vieques.
Permítanme asegurarle que no han sido olvidados en Washington, DC.
¡Yo les prometo continuar trabajando con ustedes para asegurar que
sean tratados como los ciudadanos americanos que son!
Yo he visitado su bella isla y he visto el sufrimiento de la gente.
Ahora las voces de la gente se han escuchado y sus deseos han sido
respetados con la salida de la Marina.
Pero nuestra batalla está lejos de terminar.
Como todos trágicamente sabemos, aunque la presencia física de la
Marina ya no es un obstáculo en la isla desafortunadamente el legado
de su presencia permanece – los químicos altamente venenosos para los humanos.
El hecho de que numerosos casos de personas con cáncer en Vieques
continua aumentando y que el municipio de Vieques tiene la taza de
mortandad mas alta de cáncer de entre los 78 municipios de Puerto
Rico, es traumático pero desgraciadamente no es una sorpresa para
ustedes.
Las causas de esta crisis de salud no son un misterio.
En los meses antes de la trágica muerte en abril del 1999 de David
Sanes Rodríguez, la gente de Vieques y de todo Puerto Rico se
sorprendieron de descubrir que la Marina utilizaba sus tierras en las
formas más aterrorizantes.
Napalm fue utilizado en Vieques.
Balas de Uranio fueron disparadas – y que nunca serán recuperadas.
Existen bombas sin detonar perdidas en la isla.
Remanentes de veneno permanecen – y necesitan ser removidos antes de que podamos honestamente decir que la Marina salió completamente de la isla de Vieques.
La Marina descontinuó el uso de la isla como facilidad de
entrenamiento, pero sin la limpieza necesaria y la acumulación de
metales las enfermedades continuarán en la gente de Vieques.
Los ciudadanos de Vieques han quedado sin la oportunidad de
protegerse ellos y a sus familias.
Todos los ciudadanos de Vieques han pagado un alto precio a través
del tiempo, por los constantes bombardeos que han resultado en muchas enfermedades. Toda nuestra nación debe mostrar respeto por su sacrificio y sufrimiento limpiando la isla rápida y completamente, y
garantizando la salud y la seguridad de los enfermos y los afectados
a través de cuidado medico y compensación.
Por esto estoy de su parte.
Por eso hoy yo los respaldo, por dirigir y participar en esta
protesta por la Paz.
Su lucha no ha terminado, y yo como otros varios colegas en el
Congreso continuaremos luchando con ustedes hasta que la justicia
llegue a la gente de Vieques.
Estoy con ustedes.

Let me assure you that you are not being forgotten in Washington, DC
I pledge to work with you to ensure that you are treated as the
American citizens that you are!
I have visited your beautiful island and I saw the suffering of the
people. Now, the voices of the people have been heard and their
wishes respected with the Navy having left
But our battle is far from over
As you all too tragically know, while the physical presence of the
Navy is no longer a staple of the island, an unfortunate legacy of
their presence remains - that of highly poisonous chemicals and waste
that is toxic to humans
The fact that the number of cases of people with cancer in Vieques
continues to rise, and that Vieques is the municipality with the
highest cancer mortality rate among Puerto Rico's 78 municipalities
is shocking but unfortunately not much of a surprise to you
And the cause of this health crisis is no mystery
In the months after the April 1999 tragic death of David Sanes
Rodriquez, the people of Vieques, and all of Puerto Rico were
horrified to discover that the Navy used their homeland in the most
horrific ways
Napalm was dropped on Vieques
Uranium tipped bullets were fired - and then never recovered
There are missing unexploded bombs on their island
These poisonous remnants remain - and they need to be cleaned before
one can honestly say the Navy has fully vacated the island of Vieques
The Navy's discontinued use of the island as a training facility,
without the necessary clean up, will not stop the sickness and
accumulation of these metals in you, the people of Vieques
Citizens of Vieques are being left without choice or opportunity to
protect yourselves or your families
All citizens of Vieques have paid a great price through years of
sustained bombing and the great sickness that has followed. Our one
nation should now be respectful of your sacrifice and suffering by
cleaning the island fully and promptly and ensuring the health and
safety for the sick and suffering through both care and compensation
That is why I stand with you
That is why I salute all of you today for leading and participating
in this protest for peace
Your struggle is not over, and I and many of my colleagues in
Congress will continue to struggle with you until justice is
delivered to the people of Vieques
